Porcelain painting is an art using porcelain pieces as canvas and color glazes as paints. The porcelain pieces have to be fired in a kiln at temperatures of over 800 degrees C. Different color glazes require different temperature settings and only the experienced artist can use the firing process to bring out the best in the porcelain pieces. Therefore experience sharing is beneficial to artists.

Volunteer porcelain painting teacher in the Cancer Center of Queen Mary Hospital since 2000
Despite my busy schedule, I always reserve a day in the week to teach at the Cancer Centre of the Queen Mary Hospital. I started teaching there with the help of Jacqueline and SuChiu right after the second HKPPC Exhibition which was held to raise funds for the said hospital. During the SARS, the classes were discontinued but the students/patients there were very disappointed because they found porcelain painting therapeutic and helpful in their recovery process. We have become more than teacher/students, we became friends. Thankfully I was able to resume teaching with Shirley after the SARS suspension. Some days, we also get help from other HKPCC members as the student enrolment has climbed to almost 30 from 10.

As porcelain painting requires firing in a kiln, I have to carefully ensure that their lovely painted pieces were transported back and forth from my home to the hospital safely.

Seminars and Workshops
To enhance my skills in porcelain painting, I love to participate in seminars and workshops, whether held locally or overseas. It is a great experience to paint with artists from different countries where we witness how painting is influenced by experience, culture and personality. See some of the artworks achieved in these events:
1. With Francoise Groves-de-Milleret of France - Portrait painting in 1999
2. With Rumi Agawa of Japan - Meissen painting in 2000

Local Exchanges
In order that my fellow porcelain artists and students can enjoy the same benefits of meeting prominent artists, I actively promote the invitation of prominent artists, through the enthusiastic help of fellow local artists, to share their painting skills with us in Hong Kong. These become regular social events where artists exchange thoughts and ideas. See some of these occasions:
1. With Josephine Robinson of Australia
A) Pansy with dusting techniques in 2000
B) Painting on canvas, roses and general techniques in 2001

2. With Rosemary Oh of Singapore
A) Small flowers on bisque and orchid with multi-techniques in 2001

B) Soft painting of roses in 2004

3. With David Bailey of England - Enamel & raised paste work in 2002
4. With Francoise Groves-de-Milleret - Worcester style fruit plate in 2005
5. With Keiko Shimizu of Japan - Use of luster in 2006

Participation in Hong Kong Porcelain Painting Club (HKPPC)
As Founding member of The Hong Kong Porcelain Painting Club (HKPPC) since 1999, I have served the Club in various capacities including Treasurer and Joint President. My responsibilities are to ensure that the circulation of newsletters to members, the organization of exhibitions, annual gatherings and publications are completed on time so that there are ongoing opportunities for members to display their fine artworks and exchange experience.
